The creation of ice free zones that allow safe passage for floating barges and industrial machinery is a very important preoccupation for mining and oil exploration companies in Northern Quebec and Alberta in particular.
Often, we are contacted by mineral extraction companies seeking our assistance with barge deicing. Often impeller deicers by Kasco Marine are sufficient to respond to our client’s needs.

However, in more extreme cases, such as those we see in the oil sands of northern Alberta, the conditions are complicated by extreme cold for many consecutive months. Our expertise in deicing industrial structures with the use of Bubble Tubing® or OctoAir™ industrial diffusers is often sought after due to their reliability, low cost of operations and no moving parts or electricity in the water. Indeed, deicing is a critical part of the operations to allow pumping of water for the protection of equipment such as dewatering and maintenance barges, dredges and other structures. With the possibility of combining deicing systems using the linear Thawline Bubbler™ (with Bubble Tubing®) and impeller deicers, we have been able to meet many client`s needs. For more on this subject and turn key deicing solutions, we invite you to read this article: « Turnkey Deicing Solutions for the Oil Industry in Alberta ». In addition to this project, we have undertaken similar deicing projects for the protection of mining infrastructure in the oil sands of northern Alberta.
In another case, a company with a mandate to build a new infrastructure at the foot of a hydro dam in northern Ontario came to us looking for solutions to protect their barges from the potential damage caused by the displacement and expansion of ice and to ensure the freedom of movement of the barges at the work site.
We proposed an installation of multiple OctoAir-10™ diffusers. Here is an extract from the email of the project director:
« (…) In all – the system worked well. We had to dial it in a bit, but during the entire Christmas shutdown 2011-2012, I did not receive a call from the personnel on site. Once we got it dialed in it ran for about 3 months with very little maintenance.
We thank Canadian Pond Products for their assistance. I still have the 11 Octo-diffusers, and will use this system again, should the need arise. »
